Acne is a condition that affects most people at some point in their life, and is most common during the teenage years, due to the increase in hormones, but can also occur at any other time. It can vary in type and severity from person to person. It can be a frustrating condition to live with as there is no exact cure, which is why it’s so important to consult a Dermatologist, if you’re suffering from persistent acne, so they can ensure you get the treatment you need.

Why visit the Cambridge Clinic for your acne?

Our leading Dermatologists have a much more in-depth knowledge of acne and scarring, as well as how this condition is caused, than many other medical professionals. We also have state of the art equipment and facilities, ensuring that you will get the most up to date and effective treatment options on the market.

Our clinic is located inside a larger centre, with a range of services available for your comfort. This includes restaurants, a gym, swimming pool and 5-star golf course. This means you can have a relaxing and comfortable visit, free of stress and where you feel completely taken care of.

How can your acne be treated at the Cambridge Clinic?

Acne has many different treatment options, and your Skin Doctor at our Cambridge Clinic will thoroughly assess your skin and medical history, before deciding the best treatment plan for you. This will include examining the affected areas, finding out what you’ve tried in the past and talking to you about any patterns you may have noticed in your breakouts.

We have a wide variety of treatment options for acne and will always choose the best one for your skin type. It is also sometimes a case of trying a few different options to see which one works for you. As with all acne cases, treatment is entirely individual to the person and their medical history.

Our Dermatologists can provide topical creams, face washes and medications. We can also prescribe stronger antibiotics and medications like Isotretinoin (one of the only drugs that can permanently cure acne), which many GPs are unable to offer.

We also have more targeted treatments such as microdermabrasion and laser treatments. This includes the Fraxel laser, M22 laser, CO2, and IPL lasers. We use these primarily for reducing scarring but they can also be used to help improve acne as well. Every Dermatologist that works at our Cambridge Clinic has years of experience treating acne and scarring, giving you the best chance of achieving your desired results.

How can the Cambridge Clinic reduce your acne scars?

As well as helping you get your acne under control, we can also help treat any scars caused by your acne. Many people who suffer with severe acne develop scarring, particularly if they have squeezed a lot of their spots. We would always advise trying to refrain from picking or squeezing your spots, particularly deeper ones, and cysts, which can leave severe or even permanent scars.

At our Cambridge Clinic, we have several options available to treat all types of scars. This includes topical creams and lasers which resurface the skin, fading scarring such as hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Your Dermatologist will be able to advise you on which treatment is best for your scarring type, as well as how many sessions will be needed to get the best result.

Your Dermatologist will assess your scars and suggest the best option for your skin. If you are suffering with active acne, we always aim to get this under control first, before tackling any associated scarring.

What causes acne and how can we help?

Acne is caused when oil glands on the skin produce excess sebum. This mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria, blocking the glands and causing spots. This can be in the form of whiteheads, blackheads, papules (red spots), pustules (under the skin spots containing pus) and cysts.

The causes of what leads to excess oil being produced differ depending on the person, but it’s often cause by hormonal changes, such as during puberty, breakouts related to the menstrual cycle in women and menopausal acne.

It is also thought that acne may be genetic in some cases. Some research has suggested that acne can be caused by eating certain foods for some people. It can also be the result of stress or be made worse in times of stress, due to the change in hormone levels.

It can be very difficult to work out the cause for your acne, particularly in adult acne, but a Dermatologist in our Cambridge Clinic can help to find the underlying cause of your acne and give you the most effective treatment.

We can target your acne from multiple angles such as altering your hormone levels by prescribing the contraceptive pill, giving advice on any dietary changes and reducing the bacteria and dead skin on the affected areas with specialist creams and gels.

What types of acne do we treat?

There are many different types of acne, and your Dermatologist can assess which one you have if you are not sure. One of the most common types of acne that we treat at the Cambridge Clinic is whiteheads and blackheads, which is often experienced by teenagers. We normally prescribe topical retinoid creams as the most effective treatment for this type of acne, but we may offer multiple treatments, to give you the optimum result.

Another type of acne which we are highly experienced in treating is Inflammatory acne, which consists of redness and swelling on the skin, which is often deeply blocked with oil, bacteria, and dead skin. It can be painful and cause scars if the skin is picked or squeezed. An effective treatment for this is regularly applying Benzyl Peroxide, or this combined with Erythromycin to the skin. Other treatments we can offer include antibiotics or Isotretinoin in more severe/ persistent cases.

One of the most aggressive forms of acne which we see is Cystic acne, which is less common. It can be very painful and presents itself in the form of large under the skin swellings (usually on the face). These are pus filled and are often very challenging to get rid of.

If you are suffering with this, making an appointment with one of our experienced Dermatologists is vital and is the first step towards your recovery from this often emotionally distressing condition.

Whatever type of acne you are suffering with, your Dermatologist will be able to find you the best treatment, talk you through your options and support you during your treatment.

When should you see a Dermatologist about your acne?

If you have persistent spots or acne which is not going away with over-the-counter skin care products, we recommend speaking to one of our leading Dermatologists as soon as possible. If you wait, not only are you prolonging your suffering, but your acne could get worse if left untreated and your chances of permanent scarring greatly increase, the longer you leave it.

We treat mild, moderate, and severe acne across all ages, including teenagers, pre-teens and adults. The quicker your acne is under control, the quicker you can move on with your life and not let it affect you. If you’re worried about your skin or your child’s skin, we would advise seeking professional advice from one of our Dermatologists, and not waiting for it to get worse.
