Our team of Paediatric Dermatologists have many years’ experience specialising in treating skin conditions in both children and teenagers. We understand how important it is to you that your child gets the best possible care and attention, which is what we provide at our Cambridge Clinic.

If you’re looking for a Paediatric Dermatologist Cambridge, then our clinic is the right place for you. We are used to treating patients for all types of skin conditions including Acne, Eczema, Birthmarks, and Warts. Whatever you may be concerned about, we can help provide effective treatment.

What do we treat at the Cambridge Clinic?

We treat all skin conditions in both adults, teenagers, and children at our Cambridge Clinic. Our Dermatologists specialise in treating young children and have expert knowledge in this area. They can diagnose and treat all skin conditions, but the most common ones we see in children and teenagers are Acne, Moles, Birthmarks, Eczema and Warts.

We can also check birth marks and moles to see if they are safe left alone or are best removed/ treated.

What treatments do we offer?

We have a range of different treatments available and your Skin Doctor will recommend which is the best for your child, depending on their condition. These are the main treatments we usually offer for the following conditions:

Acne – We understand how distressing dealing with acne can be for your child and we want to help get it under control as soon as possible, so they can feel confident again. We treat all types of acne and scarring. We can prescribe topical treatments as well as medications, including Roaccutane, which is not available through your GP. We can also advise on a home skin care routine to help prevent spots. We can also prescribe the contraceptive pill for women, as this may help control hormonal acne.

Moles – Most moles are harmless but if you’re worried about a mole on your child’s body, we can examine this, explain any associated risks, and remove them in some cases, if needed.

Birthmarks – These are dark patches of pigment which appear after birth. They are usually nothing to worry about but we understand they can be unsightly and you may be concerned that your child will find them embarrassing as they grow older. We have several options for reducing the appearance of birth marks, such as laser treatment. Your Paediatric Dermatologist will advise you of the best options, depending on where the birth mark is located, the age of the child and the size of the mark.

Eczema – Eczema is when the skin is itchy, red, and dry and is very common amongst children. Many children grow out of it, but it can be an uncomfortable condition to live with. Our aim is to reduce your child’s symptoms as much as possible, so that it does not interfere with their day-to-day life. Your Dermatologist at the Cambridge Clinic will be able to diagnose the type of Eczema which your child is experiencing during their consultation. They will then be able to suggest the most effective treatment. Treatments include specialist gels and lotions as well as steroid creams to reduce the itching, moisturise and repair the skin. They can also help you determine whether anything may be causing or irritating their Eczema. This may include allergy patch testing or asking you to keep note of when their symptoms flare up, to see if there are any patterns.

Warts – Warts are also a very common condition amongst children, particularly on the hands and feet (Verrucae). Although they are not harmful and often go away on their own, they are very easily spread to other parts of the body and to other people, particularly between children, so it’s important to get them removed. We can professionally remove and treat warts at our clinic with several treatments including Salicylic acid to remove the wart and kill the virus, as well as freezing off warts with Cryotherapy. This can usually be done very easily and successfully when carried out by a professional, although your child is likely to need several treatments to ensure the warts do not return.

Other skin conditions – We specialise in dermatology and treat all skin related conditions and concerns. If you are concerned about something and you are not sure what it might be, we can take a look and put your mind at ease. However big or small the issue, we can help.

What happens during the consultation?

During your consultation, you will accompany your child. You may wish to speak on behalf of your child, depending on their age. Our Paediatric Dermatologists are used to dealing with both teenagers and young children, so will be able to easily adapt their language and style to make sure your child feels comfortable and understands what is going on.

They will explain any plans for treatment to your child in a way they will comprehend and can answer any questions they or you may have about their skin condition or the way it is treated.

They will start by examining any affected areas to make a diagnosis and will take a relevant medical history of your child, including when you first noticed the condition or anything you may have tried to treat it in the past. They can then recommend the best treatment plan, which may include several options for you to think about or discuss with your child.

We may also investigate further if needed by performing a skin biopsy, requesting a blood test, urine sample or skin swab, to help us determine what may be causing your child’s symptoms.
