Not all cysts require removal, but it’s often recommended if the cyst is painful, infected, growing, or cosmetically concerning. Our dermatologists will advise you based on your specific case.
Cyst removal is usually a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic. The entire cyst sac is removed to help prevent recurrence.
Some scarring is possible, but we use techniques that aim to minimise scarring wherever possible. The size and location of the cyst will influence the final appearance.
Most cyst removals take around 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size and complexity. You can usually go home immediately after the procedure.
Yes, we frequently remove cysts in visible or sensitive areas like the face, neck and scalp. Special care is taken to ensure the best cosmetic outcome.
You’ll be given detailed aftercare instructions, which may include keeping the area clean, avoiding certain activities, and attending a follow-up if stitches are used. Healing typically takes 1–2 weeks.
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. You may feel mild discomfort afterwards, but this is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
If the entire cyst sac is removed successfully, recurrence is unlikely. However, if part of the sac remains, there is a small chance it could return—which is why we aim for complete excision.
